Roberto E. Montenegro, MD, PhD

I am a Yale-trained board-certified adult psychiatrist, a University of Washington (UW) trained board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, and an educator and researcher at the UW School of Medicine and Seattle Children’s Hospital.

As a psychiatrist, I treat children, adolescents, and adults and can provide therapy, medication, or both. I can help with most psychiatric conditions, including anxiety, depression, attention deficit disorders, trauma, physician burnout, and topics specific to race, racism, and mental health. I can provide medication management or counseling services in WA, CA, and AK.

At UW, I serve as a clinical assistant professor. Until opening my private practice, I was the former director of mental health services at Echo Glen Children's Center, a medium- to maximum-security facility. I trained future psychiatrists there and provided mental health services for incarcerated youth. My work at UW and SCH now focuses on research where I examine personal, interpersonal, and academic content bias reduction strategies, doctor-patient communication, and health inequities. My work has been featured in top medical journals and media, including the Journal of the American Medical Association, the Journal of General Internal Medicine, USA Today, Statnews, King 5 News, National Geographic Family, and National Public Radio.

Besides my part-time private practice and ongoing research and clinical work at The University of Washington/Seattle Children’s Hospital, I continue to provide care to incarcerated youth at Echo Glen Children’s Center and unaccompanied youth in detention centers in Washington State.

Outside of work, I enjoy the outdoors, traveling, and spending time with family, friends, and my Chief Happiness Officer, Oso.

My Approach

My practice provides individualized psychiatric care for children, adolescents, and adults. My in-depth evaluations are informed by the person’s unique biological, psychological, and social background and lived experiences. I provide psychotherapy and medication management and have a particular interest and expertise in cross-cultural psychiatry, caring for people of diverse backgrounds, and providing mental health services to physicians and other individuals with public and/or high-stakes careers. I am licensed in CA, WA, and AK.
